US stock market summary and news today - Sep 3, 2026

U.S. stocks closed sharply higher Thursday, September 3, 2026, snapping back from earlier-week weakness. It was the second straight gain and the strongest session in about a month for the Dow and S&P 500.

Index closes

  • S&P 500: 7,747.71, +81.11 (+1.06%)
  • Dow Jones Industrial Average: 53,686.11, +624.16 (+1.18%)
  • Nasdaq Composite: 26,584.06, +366.23 (+1.40%)

The indexes are now on track for a weekly gain after a mixed start to September. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to about 4.77%. Oil (WTI) held near $91.50–$91.80.

What moved markets

The main catalyst was Fed Governor Christopher Waller. He pointed to signs of disinflation and said he would lean toward holding rates steady at the mid-September FOMC meeting unless inflation data surprises to the upside. That pulled back rate-hike odds and helped long-term yields ease after recent multi-year highs.

Tech and communication-services names led. Microsoft, Meta, and Apple participated in the rally. Nvidia rose after confirming a roughly $12.9–$13 billion deal to acquire Hugging Face, the major open-source AI model and dataset platform; the deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory review. Nvidia said Hugging Face would remain an open platform.

Snowflake soared after a strong Q2 report: revenue and adjusted EPS beat, product revenue grew 37% (third straight quarter of acceleration), and full-year product-revenue guidance was raised. The stock jumped roughly 17–24% on the results. Broadcom fell despite an earnings beat, as its outlook disappointed. Dell had been a standout the prior session after raising guidance.

Geopolitical risk remained in the background, with U.S.–Iran tensions supporting oil prices.

What’s next

Friday brings the August nonfarm payrolls report (a key input before the Fed’s Sept. 16 decision). Markets then head into the Labor Day weekend. August CPI is due Sept. 11. Investors will watch whether jobs and inflation data keep rate-hike odds contained or revive them.
